The Bharatiya Janata Party (lit. Indian People's Party) is a right-wing to far-right party in the
Republic of India. It was founded in 1980 by Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lal Krishna Advani, whom the former would later serve as Prime Minister of India from 1998 to 2004.
As of 2025, it is the current ruling party of India, with Narendra Modi, a member of the party, as the prime minister. It is also the largest political party in the world, with around 198,000,000 members, making the party itself having a higher population than that of
Bangladesh, a neighboring country of
India.
